I follow the Akismet spam statistic of Time Recursion and empty the spam bin quite regularly (about twice a week), mostly because I hate being welcomed to my Dashboard by the message: “You have 79 new spam comments” and because I secretly hope that Akismet made a mistake and I did receive a comment with some content. Sadly I’m mostly wrong, and this plug-in really does a wonderful job.

But it really makes you think, how is such a disproportionate ratio between legitimate comments and spam even possible? Especially when you take into account that most of those spam messages (approximately 60% in my case) are not made by bots, but from real people that try to bring traffic to their own website. I understand that my website is quite attractive for advertising through comments since Time Recursion is a do-follow website, but guys, come on! At least write something that’s related to the post you’re commenting! If you’ll insert your website address in the Website field, you’ll still get the PR juice and if the content of your comment is related to the article I’ll approve that comment without hesitation, you can be sure of that. After all, I’m always eager to get some feedback on what I write.

The time is ticking again, and surprisingly enough, the Internet has prepared a handful of new surprises in the meantime. Probably one of the most anticipated and revolutionary that is sure to reshape and realign the development on the Big web and might as well be called the innovation of the decade, is Wolfram’s WolframAlpha web search engine.

Some of you, mostly those that are in Computer Science, Mathematics or Physics related studies have already met Wolfram Mathematica, a great piece of software that’s become quite indispensable in my every day’s life. And now, we can finally enjoy all of the beauties, functionality and computational power of its algorithms on the Internet, for free. But the awesomeness doesn’t stop here, it continues with the search engine’s capability to serve you some cold facts about countries, finances, cities, important personalities and even more, all enriched with additional charts and data to help you get what you want. The usefulness of WolframAlpha is so enormous, that there’s been already released a Firefox plugin, that let’s you integrate Wolfram’s search in your Google home page. Now what do you want more for a perfect browsing experience?

As good as it may seem, it gets even better. This is not the only newcomer on the scene in the past few weeks. A few days ago Google announced a new real-time interface called Google Wave, that is said to be available to public later this year. But what is it all about? Wave is essentially a clone of Facebook’s home page and twitter, but with a much more rich interface and a wider range of applicability. Basically it’s a place where your and your friends’ s e-mail, pictures, videos, music, maps and more will be merged in a time-wave, enabling you to engage in real time conversations.

As I write this, we’re nearing midnight here, and with this the 1st of April, when the Conficker worm is believed to strike. You probably already know about this, or have heard about this imminent threat, because of all the hype the mass media have created around it. And how they couldn’t! It’s one of the smartest worms ever designed, and has already infected more than 3,000,000 computers worldwide.

But why are people so afraid of it, and why there’s no good way to get rid of it (Well, that’s not completely true, you can disable it without much problems, the hard part is finding out whether you are infected with it, and preventing from getting infected again)? The answer is pretty straightforward when you get to know how Conficker works. It’s not just the usual malware that strives to make your computer unusable. The Conficker itself is not dangerous at all to your computer. All it does is to make sure it doesn’t get detected and removed and it waits for a certain date it was programmed to, to check on the net to get new orders. Now, you might say, why don’t those big companies just make sure to take down the websites the worm will try to contact? They tried, but they weren’t successful. At the time there were only a few hundred. Now, after the last update of the worm, the base of addresses it’ll check for further instructions has grown to several tens of thousands. It’s impossible to predict all the variations and shut down so many sites on such a short notice. Microsoft, whose operating system is targeted by the worm, made known that the situation is serious. They’re even offering a $250,000 prize for the arrest of the Conficker creators.

But what can actually happen? Since the goal of Conficker is not the destruction of the computer it resides on, though this might happen when it’s work is done, it’s scary to think what else could it be. Having so many computers under control opens up an infinite amount of possibilities. Large scale cyber-attacks are not so hard to perform anymore. Even full-scale attacks on a national level are possible. It’s like SETI @home, just bigger, more powerful and with a bad scope.

The next update is tomorrow, on April’s Fools day. Will it be just an update to the algorithm or and actual command for an attack? Who knows, I guess we’ll have to see it by ourselves.

With the advent of cheap digital cameras and various image editing programs, the possibilities a casual photographer has, to give a final touch or to simply play around with his photographic masterpieces have exponentially increased. Nowadays you don’t need an expert with a secret underground laboratory, or some expensive software that makes you glad the burglar stole your car, instead of that ugly piece of code, for which you were putting your money aside those last ten years. Today you can correct red eyes, adjust the lighting or draw a moustache on the photo of your neighbor yourself, and what’s more, without spending a cent!

But of course, for someone that exhibits his extraordinary image editing skills only on special occasions, even that free software doesn’t look too appealing, and those 10 minutes of installing usually take a whole lifetime to finish. That’s why we’re glad there’s Mr Flash.

With his help, and with higher internet connection speeds, we are finally able to experience image editing within the browser, on the internet, and without any fastidious installations. Well, this is actually no big news, such internet applications were around already a few years ago, but they weren’t so powerful, and there wasn’t such a wide selection, that would cover most of the graphical operations the real programs can perform.

First there is Photoshop Express, which is considered to be, what is his bigger brother on the computer, except for the price, which is nicely rounded down to zero.

Right beside Photoshop Junior we have Splashup, that surprisingly enough even surpasses his competitor with its added functionality. You won’t be able to edit your photos as quickly and achieve similarly amazing results, but you’ll be able to draw and create your own artistic installations just as easily.

Another very powerful online program is A.viary‘s Phoenix, which is in combination with Peacock and Toucan, the best set of tools you can find right now, and will cover almost all your needs for graphical creativity and image manipulation.

And the last one among a quite larger group of such software, that I find worth to mention is FlauntR, another very useful collection of tools for professional image editing, all on the internet, again, for free.

If you take into account your emotions, you can easily find out that just in your past week, you’ve been through a couple of different moods and had your ups and downs. Some of the days are full of all kinds of feelings, while for others you can hardly say you felt anything at all. There are some days when you are bored, don’t know what to do, or simply have enough of everything. At such times, there’s nothing better than to read or watch something funny, and having a good and healthy laugh.

If you haven’t laughed yet today, and feel that this makes your day incomplete, then I think I have something to fill that void.

When I was browsing around on the net a few days ago, I came across a great website, called The Onion or The Onion News Network, which is in fact the online version of the satirical weekly publication that bears the same name. The content, which is intended for readers above the age of 18, is all a parody to important recent events or political decisions, all neatly and professionally written or filmed, to resemble and give the aspect of a true and serious content written by an ordinary news company.

To give you a preview, of what you can expect to find on their website, I included one of their satirical videos.
