Equilibrium

It’s in our nature to look after ourselves in the first place, to argue, and to be quite often unable to see, and to understand that sometimes, we have to work also for others, for our community, for the world. We give too much importance to our pride and our image of personal superiority towards others, and that, combined with high ambitions and intolerance for differences in beliefs, culture and decisions quickly lead to hostilities and wars.
All this is closely connected with the way we perceive the outer world, with how we interact and most importantly, with how we react, or better yet, with our emotions. How would the world look like without emotions? Would it really be better, if there would be no hate, no personal preferences and not a single thing for which you could say that you dislike?
Equilibrium, the movie that was released in 2002, is trying to show how would a world where emotions are prohibited look like.

Love that movie. Some call it a ripoff of the Matrix though.

Yes, I’ve heard that. But apart from the fight scenes, and the way the main charachters are dressed, there is nothing similar about them. The stories are completely different, and apart from the contrast between good and evil, and the end in which good prevails (which happens practically in every movie) there is nothing that you could say that was copied.

The first paragraph really hits where it stings.

I’ve always found the “emotion” question interesting.
Without emotion there would be no compassion or love, and it is essential for the world to have both. If we were to live in a world void of emotions, the human race would feel free to kill with no regret* (both humans and non humans). Without the emotional consequences for murder or crimes, more people would have less of a problem turning to the dark side.
It is often passion of convictions, anger or compassion and mercy that motivate people to take up a good cause for change in a brighter direction. If humans were stone like with these emotions, then one of the key motivators for “stepping forward” would be gone.
*Some debate on whether guilt and regret can be considered emotions, but for the purpose of this comment they are considered as such.

Thank you for your contribution Jade! I was hoping to get some discussion going on about this subject.
The way I see it, emotions are not only essential, but are the very core of what we call humanity and of our civilization. Not only compassion and love and all the positive emotions, as you already mentioned, but also anger, hate and every single emotion we can express, even if considered negative, define us.
The “dark part” of our feelings, even if they are responsible for the pain and damage we, or others cause, they are still necessary. Because if we wouldn’t have them, we wouldn’t be able to learn on our mistakes and improve. And that is, I guess the main reason why we can’t simply decide to “forget” about our emotions. But is there any alternative to make the world better?
