Big tasty fat Mac
by Primož on Apr.16, 2009, under Experience
[SinglePic not found]Shoving aside the largely unsuccessfully propagated, mostly true and real prejudices about the dangerously low health factor of fast-food and similar mostly American “fat-food goods”, I was delighted to stop at McDonald’s last evening. Again. After a few days’ break though, to console the irritated uprising horde of readers flashing a mix of alarming reactions on their clearly shocked faces. Hey, I can’t help myself! A nicely packed, warm, tasty Big-Mac is still a Big-Mac, no matter the rampaging economic crisis. And surprisingly enough, an unhealthy meal at the said “restaurant” is still much cheaper and commonly affordable than it’s healthy equivalent of the same caloric composition served in a fancier ambient. And not to mention that it takes less time and effort to order and consume it!
Bed, my sweet bed…

[SinglePic not found]Whew, it’s over. The hectic days I mean. This weekend has been packed with various scouting events, preparations for the Day of youth in our local Catholic community, studying for an exam, and not to talk about the unexpected attack on one of the sites I help to manage. I really had a hard time locating all the compromised files and ensuring better security. And there are still things I have to take care of, but at least the schedule’s not so tight anymore.
In the wake of uncertainty
by Primož on Mar.31, 2009, under On the Net
[SinglePic not found]As I write this, we’re nearing midnight here, and with this the 1st of April, when the Conficker worm is believed to strike. You probably already know about this, or have heard about this imminent threat, because of all the hype the mass media have created around it. And how they couldn’t! It’s one of the smartest worms ever designed, and has already infected more than 3,000,000 computers worldwide.
But why are people so afraid of it, and why there’s no good way to get rid of it (Well, that’s not completely true, you can disable it without much problems, the hard part is finding out whether you are infected with it, and preventing from getting infected again)? (continue reading…)
The Watchmen
by Primož on Mar.30, 2009, under Multimedia
[SinglePic not found]Maybe you’ve been wondering why there’s been no word from me for such a long time, or maybe you’ve been even glad about my silence. In any case, brace yourselves, ’cause I’m back! I’ve been busy, either working for various projects, and among other things also watching movies. One that caught my attention lately was the Watchmen movie.
Why, well, those of you who know me a bit better, or have read some of my earlier articles, will quickly make the connection. I’m a science fiction, fiction and action lover and I love good movies. And this one was awesome! Not just because of the story, which thankfully, hasn’t changed much from the comics, but more because of the way it was filmed. Do you remember the movies Sin City, 300 or Kill Bill? (continue reading…)
Meteotek experiment
by Primož on Mar.19, 2009, under The Sky
Earlier this month, a group of four Spanish students launched their own weather probe and proved, that you don’t need millions of dollars and high-tech equipment to accomplish what space and weather agencies do.
After almost half a year of preparations, tests and calculations, they finally assembled their probe and sent it towards the sky with great anticipation. The probe was equipped with a GPS module, a photo camera and instruments to measure air temperature, humidity and pressure.
Rubik’s cube got round
by Primož on Mar.10, 2009, under Experience
About a month ago, at the Nuremberg Toy fair in Germany, the new Rubik’s puzzle was officially presented. It’s called Rubik’s 360, and is in fact a sphere and not a cube anymore! To be more precise, this new wonder is composed of three spheres, that contain six balls, which you have to move all the way to the outer shell, and place them in their corresponding places. This new creation is less complicated, from the mathematical standpoint, than the original cube, and there are no mathematic algorithms involved in any of it’s solutions, but this doesn’t mean that it doesn’t represent any challenge. By the looks of it, and by what the demonstration video shows, it’s evident that it’s quite easy to spend a lot of time to solve this new puzzle.
The joys of upgrading from phpBB2 to 3
by Primož on Feb.23, 2009, under Maelstrom
[SinglePic not found]It’s more than one year from the official release of phpBB3 and there are still many forums running the older version, no matter the fact, that the beta versions of the third major release have been available for about three years already. And so, after a period of reasoning the pros and the cons of the upgrade, the time for switching to the new version came also for a forum I help to run, and with that a picnic basket of complications. Why a picnic basket? Because it usually looks very nice and inviting, and it holds an unimaginable quantity of various food, that is usually so different that it doesn’t go together well.
And so we strike right at the core of the issue at hand. The forum has a layout, that is optimised to work with both a joomla front-end and the phpBB2 forum itself, which is littered with php code for various modules, scripts and hacks. To sum it up, it’s not really a nice piece of code, that you can expect to work with everything you want. (continue reading…)
Windows 7 doesn’t look so appealing anymore
by Primož on Feb.17, 2009, under Experience
After the initial testing of the beta version of Windows 7, the forecasts and the first impressions were very optimistic. Although Windows 7 uses the same base core as Vista, even the beta version seemed to finally incorporate what we should already be using under Vista. Many testers and enthusiasts were very happy with what the new operating system had to offer and have already proclaimed it as the true successor to the most popular Windows of all time, the Windows XP.
With more time passing, it looks like everything is not so bright after all. Windows 7 has now started to lose his shiny title of the OS we have been dreaming about since the beginning.
Online image-editing… why not?
by Primož on Feb.12, 2009, under On the Net
With the advent of cheap digital cameras and various image editing programs, the possibilities a casual photographer has, to give a final touch or to simply play around with his photographic masterpieces have exponentially increased. Nowadays you don’t need an expert with a secret underground laboratory, or some expensive software that makes you glad the burglar stole your car, instead of that ugly piece of code, for which you were putting your money aside those last ten years. Today you can correct red eyes, adjust the lighting or draw a moustache on the photo of your neighbor yourself, and what’s more, without spending a cent!
But of course, for someone that exhibits his extraordinary image editing skills only on special occasions, even that free software doesn’t look too appealing, and those 10 minutes of installing usually take a whole lifetime to finish. That’s why we’re glad there’s Mr Flash.
